Thoughts on evil

Evil is a term often used to describe profound immorality and weakness, and is also associated with supernatural beings which are paradigms of evil. Evil is a word used to describe beings, or the actions done by beings, who are deemed to have done something wrong. Evil beings and evil actions are the two main types of evil. Evil beings refers to refers to someone or something who is morally bad, or wicked. However evil beings, are different to evil actions as evil beings can refer to supernatural things such as witches which are stereotypically describe as evil . Evil actions however are different to evil beings. This is because evil actions refers actions done which bring pain, and harm to others. Evil actions involve actions such as killing, rape and murder.

I believe that evil is a term that should only be used to describe actions, and not people. Social psychologists have done experiments to try explain how ordinary people can be effected by social conditions to perform evil actions. Due to this, I believe that beings are not evil, however the actions performed by them can be called evil. Evil actions are different from mere wrongdoings. In 2004, Hillel Steiner quoted “evil acts are distinguished from ordinary wrongs through the presence of an extra quality that is completely absent in the performance of ordinary wrongs.” This quote says that there is an extra quality in order for an action to be “evil”.

Are you here to learn or to think?

Are you here to learn or to think?

We are here to both learn and think. At school, we are learning from adults, who have who experience and knowledge than us. At school, they pass on that knowledge to us, and we are learning from what they know. We are also learning from our own experiences, as we make mistakes, and we learn from them and fix them. This is done through the use of assessment tasks, which are graded and feedback is given. Schools are one of the best, if not the best place no learn from, as many different adults feed you information, and you learn from this. In order to learn best, we must acknowledge our mistakes, and correct them, instead of thinking that we are always correct.

We also come to school to think. Thinking involves setting our mind towards something or someone, and using it to also form and connect ideas. In a school, we are thinking about how to solves problems, and we also think about new ideas. We need to learn how to think effectively so we don’t let the mind get distracted, as this will hinder our thought process. School is a great place to think, as you are away from distractions so you can focus on the tasks ahead, and get them done efficiently.

Deep thinking is how we increase our number of valuable and useful thoughts. Deep thinking is actually very hard, as we have countless possibilities to consider. It is said that humans lose focus every 10 seconds, so in order to do something, we need to continuously refocus. You know when you are doing deep thinking when you have continuously thought about a topic without having distractions.
